A map of aerial and pole studios around the world!
Hello again and welcome to the seventh issue of Building The Aerial Arts Hub — Journal of a Newbie Developer! I’m Yaiza and here’s what’s been happening over the past two weeks.
What I’ve done
Something I have been working on for months as part of The Aerial Arts Hub is a map of aerial and pole dance studios around the world. I’m really excited that this is finally done!
There are a few studio maps out there, but I’ve usually found them to be quite limited, with just a few hundred studios, not particularly international, and often out of date because they don’t get updated after a while. So I decided to create my own!
I will keep adding to the map as time goes on and I come across more studios, but I’d like to think it’s already pretty extensive, with almost 1,500 studios that span all continents. 🤩
Of course, this map will eventually be embedded into The Aerial Arts Hub as one of the many built-in resources. For now, you can explore the map and find studios near you here!
What I’m working on
Short and sweet—I haven’t gotten around to implementing the feedback I received and wrote about in the last issue into the Figma prototype since I’ve been too busy refining the studio map, so that’s up next.
What I’m learning
I finally finished The Odin Project: Foundations!!!
I started The Odin Project about a year ago; I got through the HTML and CSS parts of Foundations pretty quickly but then got stuck on JavaScript for months and months. I also spent some time going through Scrimba and Codecademy, which slowed down my progress but helped me understand some of the key concepts I was struggling with, so I’m glad I took the time to do that.
I have already started the full-stack JavaScript path and am super excited to learn more! I’m currently working through intermediate HTML and CSS, then I’ll be diving into more JavaScript once again.
Aerial things
I’ve hit a bit of a plateau with aerial hoop recently, which I guess is normal when you’re picking up advanced moves—they just take so much patience to learn, especially without a coach.
On the bright side, I’ve been loving pole again. I just got my airwalk the other day, so yay! If you’re learning pole and want a cool resource to keep track of the moves you’re learning (and the ones you aspire to learn), I highly recommend the Pole Moves app, which is free, contains no ads, and doesn’t even require registering an account. I’ve made use of it quite a bit and I think it’s super cool that people create apps like this for the community!
I’ve also been thinking about supplementing my aerial and pole training. I want to introduce more lower-body training and improve my stamina because I feel like I get out of breath very easily. The current plan is to go inline skating more consistently since it works the legs and builds stamina, plus it’s something I already really enjoy. I used to head out on my skates every week but this year I have only been skating every few months. I’ll try to make more time for it going forward.
See you in two weeks!
